Located on the border between South Australia and Victoria, and almost mid way between Melbourne and Adelaide, Mount Gambier is the major service centre for a large population both states and with a population of nearly 30,000 it is the second most populated city in South Australia. The cities main geographical feature is a dormant volcanic cone which lends its name to the city.

Mount Gambier is the major service centre for three thriving industries , the Timber industry which is serviced by huge pine plantations which extent over both states and encompass’s thousand of hectares.
The Wine industry as Mt Gambier is a the centre of Australia’s premier wine region, especially red wines from the Coonawarra region, and the tourism industry with some of the state best tourism locations including Robe, Beachport and Port MacDonnell.

Mt Gambier History

Mount Gambier (the volcano) was first sighted in 1800 by Lieutenant James Grant from the survey brig, HMS Lady Nelson, during his circumnavigation of Australia and was the first named landmark in South Australia.
The area was also seen and charted by the French navigator Baudin and there are several locations in the region bearing french names. The Mount Gambier visitor information centre has a replica of Lieutenant James Grant’s vessel (The Lady Nelson) in front of the visitor centre.
The Henty brothers who had settled in Portland during the 1830’s held vast amounts of land which included the area around Mt Gambier but in the 1840’s when the NSW government granted lands to Evelyn Sturt, the brother of the explorer Charles Sturt, the Henty’s were forced to retreat across the border
